Steven Spielberg remade the 10-time 1961 Oscar winner and musical known as “The West Side Story”. In it,we get to witness star-crossed lovers in Tony and Maria between the rival gangs – the Jets and the Sharks – of New York. The movie definitely was a remake as it presents the conditions that were set during the 1960’s particularly the social conditions and behavioral problems that existed during that decade. People expecting a modern update will truly be disappointed.

The 2021 new version fell flat as it was lacking in energy and zest as we see uninteresting actors as Tony and Maria in Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler. While they did their own songs unlike the 1961 actors Richard Beymer and Natalie Wood, their characters fell flat. The current Tony and Maria lack charisma and were purely one-dimensional. The supporting cast such like Ariana DeBose,who played Anita, and David Alvarez,who played Bernardo, as well as Rita Moreno could not save their poor performances for the story revolves around them
