This is the Swedish-language film adaptation of the second of the three “Millennium” crime novels by the Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson and it’s really essential that one sees “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” first because vital themes are continued. Most middle segments of trilogies lack the bright originality of the first and the satisfying denouement of the last, but this one will certainly hold your attention until the girl kicks the hornet’s nest.

but different, as this second in the trilogy went in a different direction involving mostly Lisbeth and her flight from and evasion of a triple murder charge. A different outcome to be sure, but one that left viewers with the same breathless feeling at the end as the first, and completely satisfied and eager for the 3rd and and bookend piece. (Many others have detailed the story, so this is mainly commentary.)

What I enjoyed most about The Girl Who Played With Fire was a rudimentary aspect of its structure that pulls you along and leaves you requiring the third film, the fact that while investigative journalist Michael Blomkvist and computer hacker Lisbeth Salander are the leads, they don’t share the screen until even later than the first film…much later. Very similar to its predecessor, they intuit one another by imprints in cyberspace.
