Paradisaical nature, beautiful faces; sure, far from a revelatory truth of things. It is far from a great movie. But as much a cosmologic blueprint, this time of the Hollywood dream of life, as Aguirre and Weir’s Picnic; the nature and faces, but also there’s no madness, no burning drive to achieve and just a perfect childish simplicity that charms. Some harmless sex. Naive acting, but fits. Naive everything actually. Almost no plot, a tropical pace, too clean images, a series of dreams sparked by adolescent desires.. It does charm, if only a bit.

It’s simple. Above water, there is bickering and compromise, playing and desire, there is law and god, images of courting and family in the viewfinder, life-and- death in the accidental world. World, in short. Below water, there is no talk or thought, no duality and just transcendent bodies dancing together, flowing nature. And of course the shark. The dual worlds template is of course from Creature of the Black Lagoon, but here the menacing beast, the shark, is not a sentient being in his world, just a beast.
